Pride of the Nation: A documentary film on the University of Punjab

Documentary film making deals with the practice of common contemporary subjects, organizations and people, to communicate, inform, and educate and nurture a awareness in their viewers. Recently, with the availability of social media, it is becoming a major source of information, and different forms of documentary are increasingly being used in academia, research and disseminating knowledge. The ability of documentary films to capture authentic voices and lived experiences is an effective tool for representing strengths and challenges of any organization, and to promote it in a true sense. It can generate a sense of appreciation and empathy in the audience. The distinctive nature of documentary to capture reality and trigger conversations in society can thus align a documentary filmmaker to a researcher. Thus, a documentary filmmaker contributes to generating knowledge in non-traditional forms by including authentic voices of participants. The research practice, firstly, comprises of a short documentary film: “Pride of the Nation”, which covers the brief timeline of the University of the Punjab. Secondly, it maps the scope and use of documentary video as a research tool and draws up some of the strengths and challenges of the non-traditional and innovative form of documentary.
